Bagels

Ingredients

  • 3tsp yeast
  • 250ml lukewarm water
  • 540g flour
  • 1tsp salt
  • 1tsp sugar (optional)
  • 1tsp baking soda
  • Honey
  • 1 egg
  • Flaxseeds or sesame seeds (optional)

Method

  • Add the yeast to the lukewarm water and dissolve the yeast (it should form bubbles if the yeast is alive which is good)
  • Add the flour, salt and sugar and then knead until a dough is formed
  • Let the dough rest for 30 minutes in the fridge
  • Roll the dough out into a thick cylindrical shape and cut into equal sized balls
  • Roll each ball out into a smaller cylinder and form the bagel shape by joining the two sides together
  • Boil each bagel for 2 minutes on each side in a pot of water with 1tsp baking soda and a splash of honey
  • Place all the bages on a tray lined with foil and parchment paper
  • Crack an egg into a bowl and whisk it, the use it to egg wash the top of the bagels. Add the seeds over the top of the bagels at this stage.
  • Bake in the oven at 220C for 30 minutes

Tips
